Unity to Unreal
with Whitt Sellers
Wed, Sep 16 · 11am–1pm ET
Taught live on Zoom and recorded.
About this session
For anyone coming from Unity: the terms, panels, and habits that translate, the ones that don't, and a hands-on path from Blueprints and materials to animation state machines.
What we covered
This session translated fundamental Unity concepts, workflows, and terminology into Unreal Engine. Whitt Sellers demonstrated how to adapt editor layouts, build interactive Actor Blueprints, configure parameterized materials, and migrate assets using FBX. The class also covered setting up the Virtual Reality template and driving character state machines with Animation Blueprints.
- 01Mapping core Unity concepts, terms, and interface panels to their Unreal Engine equivalents.
- 02Customizing Unreal editor layouts to match standard Unity workspace arrangements.
- 03Creating an Actor Blueprint with components and scripting rotation toggles via node-based input logic.
- 04Setting up a base material with parameters and generating lightweight Material Instances.
- 05Adding the Virtual Reality Template feature pack and testing with OpenXR and VR Preview.
- 06Exporting static and animated assets from Unity via FBX and importing them into Unreal.
- 07Adjusting rotation offsets during FBX reimport to correct coordinate axis differences between engines.
- 08Building an Animation Blueprint with state machines, transitions, and boolean logic for character dancing.
- 09Casting to character animation instances inside the Level Blueprint to trigger runtime state changes.
